Early goals by Carvalho carries Marauders past Cobbers

BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Mary Men's soccer team scored early against Concordia College (Minn.) and never looked back, leading the Marauders to a 4-1 victory over the Cobbers. It was UMary's second exhibition match of the season.

The Marauders were led by dominant performances by Gabriel Carvalho and Andre Almqvist. Carvalho scored the first goal of the game just a mere nine minutes in when he received an assist from Almqvist and chipped the ball over the top of the goalie's head. Not even three minutes later, Carvalho was back at it again, scoring his second goal of the game with assists from both Nathan Clifford and Almqvist.

The Cobbers hopped on the board with an unassisted goal by Nate Weaver, who brought the ball up the right side of the field for a one-on-one shot against the goalie that he won, pulling the Cobbers within 2-1 in the 23rdminute.

Alberto Ascensio got on the score sheet when he converted a penalty kick in the 40th minute of action. The Marauders third goal was set up when Stanley Joseph was fouled in the penalty box at the end of a run off a free kick set piece.

The second period featured significantly less scoring action than the first but the Marauders continued to perform and put on a show. Just five minutes into the second period, Andre Almqvist scored off an assist from Carvalho where he passed the ball from the center of the goal to the left side for Almqvist to knock it in.

The Marauders open the regular season at Concordia University on August 30 in Portland, Oregon. The Marauders play their home opener next Sunday, September 2, at 1 pm on the University of Mary soccer field against the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
