Victory narrowly escapes Marauders grasp in twin bill against Golden Eagles

WATFORD CITY, ND – In a battle between a pair of teams searching for their first conference win of the season, the University of Mary baseball team came up just short in a pair of scheduled home games moved west to Watford City, ND. The University of Minnesota Crookston edged the Marauders 5-4 in the opener before taking game two 12-0.

Charles Bielejeski threw three innings of shutout relief and Jaxon Ford scored twice and drove in a run but the Marauders couldn't overcome a pair of crooked innings posted by the Golden Eagles, who scored two in the second and three in the fourth.
 
PIVOT POINT
Two hits, two walks and a hit batter with the bases loaded led to three runs for the Golden Eagles in the fourth inning, pushing UMC to a 5-3 lead.
 
The Marauders scored once in the bottom of the fourth inning when a Ford ground out scored Seth Siverson from third. Jesus Payan followed with a two-out double but was stranded at second base. UMary would add baserunners in the fifth and sixth innings also but couldn't find a way to get the equalizer.  
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Ford walked three times, scored twice, had an RBI and a steal and finished the game officially 0-for-1.
 
Jesus Payan was 2-for-4 with a double.
 
Ian Fisher entered the game with one out and the bases full in fourth innings and retired both batters he faced on fly balls to end the inning, the first a sacrifice fly that scored a run.
 
Bielejeski pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits and a walk with one strikeout.
 
UMary outhit UMC 6-5.
 
The Marauders turned a 7-4-3 double play to end the second inning. Chris Scott made a sliding catch in left center field on a ball hit by Anthony Stewart and UMary doubled David Anaya off first base. However it was also a sacrifice fly as Zach Frazier tagged and scored from third before Anaya was doubled off of first for the second run of the inning for UMC.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
The Marauders left eight runners on base… UMary pitchers issued eight walks and hit one batter… UMC walked six batters and hit two.

Minnesota Crookston scored multiple runs in five different innings, including four unearned runs in the second inning to gain a sweep over UMary.
 
PIVOT POINT
After Marauders starter Trevor Zacher retired the first two Golden Eagle hitters in the second inning, a walk and an error opened the door for UMC to score four times with two outs, all unearned runs. The big blow was a 2-run single up the middle by Ben Thoma.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Nick McCann and Seth Siverson each had a hit for the Marauders.
 
Jr. LHP Noah Lanter pitched a career-best three innings for UMary.
 
UMC's 1-2 hitters – Stewart and Thoma – were a combined 5-for-7 with four runs scored and seven RBIs.
 
UMC RHP Jayden Grover pitched a 2-hit complete game shutout for the Golden Eagles, striking out five and walking one.
