Home runs push Cougars past Marauders

WATFORD CITY, ND – Relocated to western North Dakota from eastern South Dakota, home runs proved the downfall for the University of Mary baseball team in a pair of losses to the University of Sioux Falls as the Cougars scored all but three of their home runs on four swings of the bat. Hitting a pair of home runs in both games of a Northern Sun midweek doubleheader, the Cougars defeated the Marauders 7-2 and 6-2.  
 
GAME 1 University of Sioux Falls 7 UMary 2
Bookend 2-run home runs by Josh Rehwaldt in both the first and the sixth innings lifted Sioux Falls past UMary 7-2.
 
PIVOT POINT
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a 2-run blast by Rehwaldt. The Marauders were unable to overcome the defict.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Marauders pitchers allowed just six hits but walked six and struck out three.
 
Ian Fisher pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
 
Five Marauders had hits in the game. Jesus Payan had a double and scored a run.
 
Rehwaldt was 2-for-3 with two home runs, three runs scored and four RBIs.
 
Dylan Gavin scored twice, both on Rehwaldt homers.
 
Matt Graham allowed four hits, two walks and two runs in six innings to gain the win.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
Three times the Marauders left two runners on base in an inning and eight total for the game. The Cougars left seven.
 
GAME 2 USF 6 UMary 2
A pair of 3-run home runs, one by Alex Elizondo and the second by Anthony Lopez, delivered USF all the runs they needed in the game. Elizondo provided a 3-0 lead for Sioux Falls in the second inning. UMary scored single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to pull within a run before Lopez put the game out reach with his 3-run home run in the seventh.  
 
PIVOT POINT
A Connor Doll single through the left side scored Nick McCann to pull UMary within 3-2 in the fifth inning but potential tying run Seth Siverson was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from second. The Marauders moved the tying run into scoring position with two outs in the top of the seventh but would come no closer as the Cougars sealed the game on the Lopez 3-run seventh inning home run
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Charles Bielejeski allowed three hits and three runs in five innings. He walked six and struck out one.
 
Jesus Payan and Nick McCall were both 2-for-4 with a run scored.
 
Darius Barlas and Connor Doll both posted a hit and an RBI.
 
Alex Elizando was 4-for-4 with a double and home run for USF.
 
STAT OF THE GAME
Connor Doll twice started third to first double plays in the game, fielding grounders, stepping on third and firing to first to short circuit a pair of potential USF rallies.

The Marauders visit Aberdeen, SD, for a pair of NSIC twin bills with Northern State University om Saturday and Sunday, April 21-22.
