Time runs out for Marauders in overtime loss to Bulldogs

DULUTH, MN – A battle from the opening tip, the University of Mary women's basketball team ran out of time in a 69-66 overtime loss at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The game featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes with neither team holding a lead of more than eight points in the contest.

Trailing by seven early in the fourth quarter, the Marauders ran off seven straight points to knot the game at 58-58 with just under five minutes remaining in regulation behind a Jordyn Jossart 3-pointer, a Lauren Rotunda layup and a pair of Cassie Askvig free throws.

The Bulldogs and the Marauders exchanged points down the stretch before Jossart knocked down another 3-pointer for a 65-64 Marauders lead with just over a minute to play. After UMD and UMary traded missed shots, Sarah Grow forced overtime with six seconds left when she hit the first of two free throws.

UMD opened the scoring in the overtime on a Payton Kahl basket less than 30 seconds into the extra session. After both teams exchanged missed shots and turnovers, the Marauders scored their lone point in the fifth stanza when Lauren Rotunda hit a free throw with over three minutes remaining.

Missed opportunities haunted the Marauders over the next three minutes as UMary committed two turnovers and allowed the Bulldogs to snare three offensive rebounds.

Looking to take a lead, Rotunda managed the Marauders first shot in over three minutes with an attempt in the final half minute of play but UMD hauled down the rebound and sealed the game with a Kahl layup with 11 seconds remaining.

Askvig posted her eighth double double of the season with 19 points and ten rebounds, both game highs. Gabbie Bohl added 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Lauren Rotunda, playing all but one minute in the game, added 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Grow led UMD with 19 points. Katie Stark added 12 and Sammy Kozlowski posted 11 points and seven assists. Kahl had ten points off the bench.

UMary shot a stellar 49 percent for the game, including an 8-of-18 effort behind the arc. UMD shot just 41 percent but attempted 20 more field goals. The Bulldogs had 13 offensive rebounds to the Marauders five and had a +12 advantage in turnovers. The difference on ball handling miscues led to a 19-6 edge for UMD in points off turnovers.

Shooting over 80 percent at the line in the eight games leading up to the weekend, the Marauders struggled at the line, making just 10-of-19 free throw attempts. The Bulldogs were slightly worse at 8-of-16.

The Marauders slip to 12-14 overall and 8-12 in the NSIC. The loss means the Marauders will be on the road in the first round of the Northern Sun as either the sixth or seventh seed from the North Division. UMD is 15-9 and 12-8.

UMary returns home to close out the regular season on February 16-17 as Bemidji State University and the University of Minnesota Crookston visit the McDowell Activity Center.
