BISMARCK, ND – Standing toe-to-toe against the Northern Sun's preseason favorite most of the night, the University of Mary men's basketball team came up short offensively down the stretch in a 76-64 loss to visiting St. Cloud State University.
Jaylan White led the Marauders with 18 points on a night the Huskies snapped UMary's win streak at four games.
A tight contest much that featured eight ties and nine lead changes, the two teams were knotted 41-41 at intermission. UMary took its last lead at 57-55 on a Trevor Kaiser 3-pointer with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game.
The Huskies soon pulled ahead but couldn't separate from the Marauders. After six straight points from SCSU, a
Wyatt Carr steal and layup kept the Marauders within 61-59. Following a 3-pointer by Brindley Theisen, one of his four on the day, Carr again followed with another layup to stay within three points at 64-61 with 5:54 to play.
The Marauders then went cold as the Huskies ramped up their interior defense and found a spark on offense. SCSU ripped off 12 straight points – including eight straight points by All-American Gage Davis - while UMary went over five minutes before scoring again. The Marauders missed 12 straight shots, including four on one possession. The Huskies also registered three of their nine blocked shots during the final five minutes of play.
White hit 8-of-15 shots on his way to a season-high 18 points. He also added two rebounds and two assists. Carr came off the bench and paired 11 points with two steals.
Matthew Kreklow chipped in nine points, seven rebounds and three assists in the post. Overall nine Marauders scored in the game.
Davis led SCSU with 25 points and 14 rebounds. He also added three assists and three blocks. Sean Smith added 19 points, nine rebounds and five blocks. Theisen scored 18 points.
UMary (4-4 overall, 1-1 NSIC) shot 41 percent for the game, including a 29 percent effort in the second half. SCSU (6-2, 1-1) connected on 49.1 percent of its attempts.
The Marauders close out a 6-game home stand against the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Dec. 8. Game time is 5:30 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
