MINOT, ND – Coming off a two-week break for one final game in the 2018 calendar year,
Jaylan White scored 20 points for the University of Mary men's basketball team and
Tom Kubank added 16 in a 77-61 road loss to Minot State University. The two instate foes finished with a season split of their two Northern Sun games with each team winning at home.
In addition to his team-high 20 points, White added five assists and went 2-of-3 behind the arc. Kubank also hit a pair of 3s and made all six of his free throws.
The homestanding Beavers started hot and built an insurmountable lead.
Matthew Kreklow hit two baskets early and Kubank followed with a pair of 3s to keep the Marauders within 13-10 six minutes into the contest. Minot State soon built a double digit lead and used a 20-4 run to claim a 47-24 lead at intermission. UMary hit just 37 percent of its shots in the first half while Minot State connected on 60 per cent of its field goal attempts, including a 6-of-8 effort behind the arc.
Refusing to go away, UMary used an 18-4 run midway through the second half to close within 65-54 but could never cut the deficit to single digits. The Marauders outscored the Beavers 37-30 after intermission.
Kreklow had a big day on the defensive end, posting a career-high six blocks. Of his ten rebounds seven were on the defensive end. The sophomore forward also added seven points and three assists.
Connor Hellebust chipped in seven points and six rebounds.
Justin Engg added six points off the bench and
Trever Kaiser had five.
David Akibo led Minot State with 29 points, 14 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Drake Jeffries was 5-of-6 behind the arc and scored 21 points.
The Marauders (6-6 overall, 3-3 NSIC) shot 39.2 percent for the game and went 6-of-19 on treys. The Beavers (6-9, 1-5) made 48.3 percent of their field goal attempts, making 9-of-15 3-point attempts.
UMary returns home for a double-header weekend, hosting Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, Jan. 4 at 7:30 pm, and Minnesota State University on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 5:30 pm.
