LOGAN, UT –
Andrew Huber tallied twice and
Alex Flicek once as the University of Mary closed out the Beehive Showcase with a 3-3 tie against Grand Canyon University. It is the first tie in program history for the Marauders, ranked first in the ACHA Division II West region poll. It was also their first meeting with the Lopes, ranked 13
th.
The Marauders built a pair of two-goal advantages in the game but couldn't finish off the Lopes.
Despite the Marauders firing 14 shots on Lopes goaltender Michael Barabash in the first period, it wasn't until just before intermission that UMary broke through. With 59 seconds remaining, Huber converted a power play opportunity after taking a feed from
Zachery Garrett.
Flicek found the net for the 23
rd time this season just 3:27 into the second period to double the Marauders lead to 2-0.
Jakob Parisien provided the assist on the goal.
Grand Canyon cut the UMary advantage to 2-1 with their first goal of the night at the 15:34 mark.
Striking early in the third, Huber scored an unassisted goal just 1:23 into the period. It was the 20
th time he has tallied this season and built the Marauders lead to 3-1.
Unable to build on their advantage despite placing another 14 shots on net in the third, the Marauders saw their advantage slip away when the Lopes scored at 6:22 and 9:46 of the period to force overtime.
Neither team managed to score in the extra session, sending the two teams into a shootout. Though Flicek and
Marshall Tschida both converted on penalty shots while
Lance Knudson kept the Lopes out of the net, the game is recorded as a tie.
Knudson finished with 29 saves in the game, including three in the extra session. Barabash posted 45 saves for the Lopes.
The Marauders finished the Beehive Showcase 3-0-1 after facing four straight ranked teams. Now 24-1-1 and undefeated in their last ten games, UMary takes a break before visiting Minot State University on Nov. 30 before hosting the Beavers on Dec. 1.
