Dominant defensive effort leads Marauders to scoreless draw with Golden Eagles

BISMARCK, ND – On a chilly day in a game delayed 30 minutes to allow snow to be cleared from the field, the University of Mary controlled play on the field and owned the stat sheet. Despite a wide disparity in shots heavily favoring the Marauders, the visiting University of Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles managed to escape with a scoreless draw on Senior Day.

The Marauders held a 14-1 edge in shots with a 7-1 lead in shots on frame over the Golden Eagles. UMary also launched 10 corner kicks to one for UMC.

UMary had a couple opportunities to win the day but couldn't convert. In the 15th minute of play, a Caitlin Dooley attempt from inside the box with UMC goalkeeper Athena DiMario Done out of position was stopped on the goal line by a defender to thwart a UMary scoring effort.

In the second overtime with less than two minutes remaining, Jade Smith gathered the ball just outside the 6 yard box and drove the ball into the net but was eventually whistled for off side.

Smith led the UMary attack with four shots, including two on frame. Dooley also had a pair of shots on goal.

The Marauders (3-5-2/2-4-1 NSIC) defense locked down the Golden Eagles (1-8-2 / 1-5-2) attack, holding UMC to single shots in each of the first and second halves and the second overtime period. Madisyn Waltman stopped the lone shot she faced in the match to register her third clean sheet of the season.

UMary started all seven seniors honored before the game: Lisa Swärdh, Jade Smith, Kacee Bailey, Megan Lowery, Caylin Cathey, Katie Berg and Caitlin Dooley.

The Marauders next host #6 Bemidji State University on Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1 pm to kick off homecoming week at UMary.
