BOISE, ID – Venturing outside the state of North Dakota for the first time, the University of Mary hockey team opened the Bronco Showcase with a 5-1 win over Utah State University. The victory extended the Marauders perfect record in their inaugural season to 9-0.
Andy Huber scored a pair of goals in the UMary win but the most impressive number was posted by goaltender Andy Nelson. The Bismarck, ND, native stopped an incredible 38 out of the 39 shots fired on him by Utah State, the second ranked team in the ACHA West Division in the final regular season poll of last year. Both the shots and the saves are the highest total faced by a UMary netminder this season.
Not to be outdone, the Marauders peppered Utes goaltender Colter Pritchard with 51 shots.
An unassisted goal by
Jakob Parisien opened the scoring at 10:07 of the first period. With time running out before the first intermission, Huber struck with 26 seconds left before the break to double the Marauders lead, taking a feed from Benjamin Kottmeier and
Marshall Tschida.
After just 17 total shots in the first period, the floodgate opened in the second as the two teams combined for 32 shots. The lone goal was scored shorthanded by UMary's Huber with an assist registered by
Zachery Garrett.
Led by 24 shots on goal by the Marauders in the third, the combined total between the two teams was an impressive 41. A power play goal by Garrett with assists from Tschida and
Drew Lenertz provided UMary a four-goal advantage before Utah State finally got on board at 11:37 of the final period. Exactly one minute later
Logan Kraft took a feed from Lenertz and tallied the fifth and final UMary goal of the game.
UMary will play their second of four games in four days against Bronco Showcase host Boise State University on Friday, Oct. 5. The Marauders defeated the Broncos last Saturday 5-3.
