5-game win streak snapped but Marauders gain NSIC tournament berth Wednesday at Bemidji State

BISMARCK, ND – An impressive closing run to the regular season delivered the University of Mary women's soccer team a second straight trip to the postseason. The Marauders, who saw their 5-game win streak end in the regular season finale, are slated to visit Northern Sun champion Bemidji State University on Wednesday, Oct. 31, in the opening round of the conference tournament. Game time is 1 pm in Bemidji, MN.

Sitting 13th in the Northern Sun standings before the start of their winning streak, the Marauders run pushed UMary to eighth place in the final NSIC standings.

The Marauders (8-7-2 / 7-6-2 Northern Sun) closed out the regular season with a 2-0 loss to visiting St. Cloud State University (8-6-4/8-4-3). Goals in each half led the Huskies to the victory.

With neither team able to take control early, the Huskies scored the opening goal with intermission in sight. Countering off a Marauders attack, Huskies forward Claire Shea dribbled down the right sideline and slipped the ball into the left side of the net from 7 yards out in the 42nd minute.

With the wind to their back in the second half, the Marauders dominated the stat line but couldn't find a goal. UMary held a 5-1 edge in both shots and corner kicks. Instead the Huskies doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute when Maria Kass was led upfield from Broke Bares and beat Marauders goalkeeper Madisym Waltman to the lower left side of the net to seal the game. It was SCSU's only shot of the second half.

The Marauders held a 9-4 edge in shots and 5-4 in shots on frame while the Huskies managed an 8-7 corner kick advantage.

Kylee Welch and Tiffany Ohlhauser led the Marauders with a pair of shots each. Waltman had two saves for UMary. SCSU goalkeeper Zoe Welsh managed five saves.

The winner of the Marauders-Beavers tournament game advances to the NSIC semifinals. The final two rounds will be hosted by the top-remaining seed following the conclusion of the quarterfinal round. The league semifinals are Friday, Nov. 2, with the championship game Sunday, November 4.

The other NSIC first round games feature #6 Winona State at #3 Augustana, #7 Concordia-St. Paul at #2 Minnesota State and #5 St. Cloud State at #4 Minot State.

The Northern Sun tournament champion earns an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament.
