Marauders advance to NSIC semifinals, eliminate conference champion Beavers

BEMIDJI, MN – Calm and collected under pressure, University of Mary freshman goalkeeper Madisyn Waltman made a diving stop in the ninth round of a shootout between UMary and Northern Sun champion Bemidji State University to send the Marauders to the conference semifinals for a second straight year while eliminating the Beavers from the league tournament.

Officially a 0-0 draw between the Marauders (8-7-3 overall) and the homestanding and 4th ranked Beavers (17-0-2) in the opening round of the 2018 NSIC soccer tournament, UMary advances to the semifinals on the strength of an 8-7 edge in goals during the shootout, knocking home seven straight shots to end the match.

The Marauders will play Minot State University in an NSIC semifinal game at 2 pm on Friday, Nov. 2, in Mankato, MN. Minnesota State University, the second seed in the tournament, hosts the conference semifinals and the championship match as the highest-seeded team remaining after the opening round. The #2 Mavericks will host #3 Augustana at 11 am.

With the top goaltender in the NSIC in net for Bemidji State, the Marauders went on the attack in the shootout. Up first for the Marauders, senior Caylin Cathey opened with a goal into the right side of the net before BSU knotted the scoring at 1-1 with a shot just under the crossbar.

In the second slot, Jade Smith drove a shot towards the upper left corner but Beavers keeper Anna Fobbe guessed correctly and prevented a goal. BSU jumped at the opportunity to take a lead and converted their second effort to move ahead 2-1. Megan Lowery responded in the third slot to pull UMary even. Again facing a deficit to start round four, Sidney Burrell went top shelf left side to keep the Marauders hopes alive.

Now on a roll, BSU converted for their fourth straight to have a 4-3 advantage entering the fifth and final round. With the shootout on the line, senior Caitlin Dooley delivered to the left side to even the score and kept UMary breathing, setting up a dramatic attempt for the Beavers. With BSU needing a goal to advance in the tournament, Waltman instead smothered the Emily Kos attempt to leave the Marauders alive and force another shootout round.

Knotted at four each, both teams continued to drive home attempt after attempt. Cassidy Pierce scored into the right upper 90, Kylee Welch tapped her shot into the lower right side, Kacee Bailey followed into the lower right and Malia Brudvik knocked a shot into the upper right side of the net. Brudvik's conversion pushed the Marauders lead to 8-7 with all the pressure now on the Beavers to deliver.

With BSU needing a goal to continue, Waltman came up big, smothering a Melanie Peltier attempt and setting off a wild celebration for the Marauders.

Both teams had opportunities in regulation. In the opening period with the wind to their backs, the Marauders held a 7-5 edge in shots and a 3-2 advantage in shots on frame.

The Beavers, ranked as high as third in the country this season and the top team in the NCAA Central region poll earlier in the day, began to crank up its vaunted offense but was unable to crack an impenetrable Marauders defense. The Beavers took nine shots in the second, four in the first overtime and six in the second overtime to four total for UMary after intermission. Only seven of those Bemidji State shots found the net, thought, and Waltman was up to the test each time, including a rising shot she forced to glance off the crossbar.

Waltman finished with nine saves and her eight clean sheet of the season. Fobbe posted five saves for her 11th shutout.

Megan Lowery led the Marauders with three shots, including two on frame. Rachel Norton, the NSIC's leading scorer, had seven and three, respectively, for the Beavers.

The Beavers held the advantage in shots (24-11), shots on frame (9-5) and corner kicks (11-2) while fouls were fairly even (12-10 UMary).
