Hunter ties careeer-high with 30 points in Marauders loss to Warriors

BISMARCK, ND – Keith Hunter tied his career-high with 30 points and combined with Trevor Zacher to bury ten 3-pointers for the University of Mary men's basketball team. Despite the combined efforts, the Marauders failed to keep pace with visiting Winona State University in a 71-62 loss to the Warriors.

Hunter knocked down six treys in ten attempts behind the arc. Overall the junior guard was 12-of-20 from the floor. He also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Zacher continued his hot 3-point shooting. A night after making 5-of-8 behind the arc against Upper Iowa, the senior forward made 4-of-5 treys against the Warriors. The only other player in double figures besides Hunter, Zacher finished with 14 points. He also had six rebounds.

Tommy Gathje led WSU with 18 points, making three out of five trey attempts. Kevion Taylor had 13 points, six rebounds and four assists.

Both teams shot well. UMary made 48.8 percent of its shots, including an 11-for-22 effort on 3-pointers. WSU made 48.2 percent of its field goal attempts, making 10-of-27 behind the arc. With a slight 10-3 edge in offensive rebounds, plus the Marauders committing 16 turnovers to eight for the Warriors, allowed Winona State to take 13 more field goals. The Warriors outscored the Marauders 23-10 on points off turnovers and 30-14 in points in the paint.

Tom Kubank opened the scoring with a 3-pointer for the Marauders and a Hunter trey knotted the game at 6-6. A Gathje layup followed to put the Warriors in the lead the rest of the game. Soon a 14-1 Warriors run provided Winona State a 31-14 lead with just under eight minutes remaining in the first half.

Soon the game began to change. Behind a pair of Hunter threes, the Marauders pulled within 33-26 at half. After the Warriors again rebuilt their double digit lead, the Marauders battled back to single digits. UMary was within 69-62 in the final minute of play but never seriously threatened the Warriors lead.

The Marauders next tip off a four-game road trip at Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State on February 2-3.
