Odd quarter domination by Marauders not enough in road loss to Golden Eagles

CROOKSTON, MN – On a night of odds and evens, the University of Mary women's basketball team dominated the first and third quarters but big performances by the University of Minnesota Crookston in the second and fourth stanzas lifted the Golden Eagles past the visiting Marauders 85-74.

An inside-out attack for the Marauders featuring nothing but layups and a trio of 3-pointers, UMary exploded for a 23-7 lead and led 25-13 at the end of the first quarter. After shooting a blistering 62 percent from the floor in the opening stanza, the Marauders went to absolute zero in the second, failing to convert any of their 13 field goal attempts but making all eight free throw attempts. UMC outscored UMary 25-8 in the second and the Golden Eagles led 38-33 at intermission.

The Marauders quickly regained the lead in the second half with Cassie Askvig leading the charge. The sophomore forward scored seven points on a pair of layups and a 3-pointer as UMary scored 12 of the first 14 points of the second half to claim a 45-40 lead. After a surge from the Golden Eagles to take a brief lead, the Marauders closed the third on an 8-4 run and led 59-57 entering the final period.

The two Northern Sun foes exchanged leads early in the fourth with Gabbie Bohl providing the Marauders their final advantage of the night at 65-63 with approximately seven minutes left in the game.

Just like in the second quarter, the Marauders again struggled to score and slowly the Golden Eagles began to separate. From the make by Bohl until the 30 seconds of play the Marauders went over six minutes without hitting a field goal. UMary went 0-for-4 from the field, committed five turnovers and making 3-of-6 free throws. With the Marauders offense stalled, the Golden Eagles went on a 16-3 run, keyed by making 10-of-11 free throw attempts and 14-of-15 overall in the fourth quarter.

Bohl led the Marauders with 20 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Askvig added 18 points, five rebounds and three assists. Lauren Rotunda chipped in ten points, six rebounds and three blocks.

Abby Guidinger ame off the bench to score 22 points for UMC. Caitlin Michaelis added 20 points and Isieoma Odor and Micaela Noga both posted 16 points.

The Marauders (8-11 overall, 4-9 NSIC) connected on 45.5 percent of their shots and made 18-of-24 free throws. The Golden Eagles (5-12, 5-8) made 45 percent of their field goal attempts and won the game at the line, making 25-of-26 free throws. Both teams made six treys. Turnovers also proved an issue for UMary as UMC held a 16-5 edge in points off turnovers.

The Marauders conclude their weekend at Bemidji State University at 4 pm on Saturday, January 20.
