BISMARCK, ND – For the second straight night the University of Mary women's basketball team closed strong, earning the Marauders their first Northern Sun weekend sweep of the season. Sophomore forwards
Cassie Askvig and
Gabbie Bohl combined for 43 points and Askvig and
Lauren Rotunda both posted double doubles in the Marauders 90-84 overtime win over visiting Minnesota State University.
Askvig finished the night with 23 points, ten rebounds, four assists and two blocks. She recorded six of her points in the overtime session. Bohl recorded 20 points and added seven rebounds and two steals.
Lauren Rotunda picked up her team-leading fifth double double of the season with 15 points and ten rebounds. The sophomore guard chipped in five assists, two steals and two blocks.
Nearly perfect from the field,
Dani Williams contributed 15 points and pushed her career total to 948 points. She made all three 3-point attempts and went 6-of-7 from the floor.
Macy Williams also had three treys in the game and scored 11 points. The freshman had a team-leading six assists and added six rebounds.
Kristin Klitzke made 9-of-10 shots for Minnesota State and led the Mavericks with 22 points.
Holding the lead much of the night, the Marauders hoped to avoid overtime when Bohl hit a jumper with nine seconds left in regulation to push the Marauders in front 70-68. Mackenzie Dahl, though, scored in the paint with three seconds remaining to force overtime.
A pair of
Dani Williams 3-pointers pushed UMary to a 78-74 lead early in the fifth stanza but the Marauders couldn't shake the Mavericks as MSU scored four straight to even the score.
The Marauders then took control with a pair of big baskets. Breaking free on the baseline, Rotunda converted a 3-point play when Askvig found her in the paint for a layup. After a defensive stop, Rotunda then hit Bohl cutting to the basket with 45 seconds to play. Bohl converted the layup but not the free throw and the Marauders led 83-78.
Klitzke answered with her own layup and the Marauders lead closed to 83-80. Minnesota State could get no closer though, as UMary sealed the game at the line. In the final 29 seconds, the Marauders made 7-of-8 free throws , including four straight by Askvig.
The Marauders shot a scintillating 51.6 percent from the floor, including an 8-of-18 effort behind the arc. UMary was stellar at the free throw line, making 16 of 18.
MSU connected on 48.5 percent of its shots, was 6-of-13 on treys and made 14-of-18 free throws.
UMary dominated the glass with a 42-24 advantage that led to the Marauders outscoring the Mavericks 13-2 in second chance points. MSU stayed close to UMary by holding a 17-7 edge in points off turnovers.
Now into the second half of the conference schedule, the Marauders are 8-10 overall and 4-8 in the Northern Sun. Minnesota State is 5-12 and 3-8.
The Marauders next visit Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State on January 19-20.
