Fast start, strong close carries Marauders to home win over Golden Bears

BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary women's basketball team claimed an early lead behind the arc and won the game at the line in a 74-66 win over visiting Concordia-St. Paul. The Marauders nailed eight treys in the first half and made 15 free throws in the second to secure the Northern Sun win.
 
Gabbie Bohl led the Marauders with 17 points and nine rebounds. The sophomore center was 5-of-8 from the floor and 7-of-9 at the line. She scored 12 of her points after intermission.
 
One of three Marauders with thee treys in the game, Dani Williams had 13 points and four rebounds. She was 3-for-6 behind the arc and made all four free throw attempts. Jordyn Jossart posted 11 points off the bench, all in the first half. The reserve guard made 3-of-5 attempts from behind the arc.
 
Freshman guard Macy Williams also hit three 3-pointers and finished the game with nine points, four rebounds and four assists. Christal Hearn posted seven points, all in the opening half. Lauren Rotunda six points, six rebounds and four assists.
 
The Golden Bears were paced by Anna Schmitt, who poured in 28 points. She was 12-of-19 from the floor with three 3-pointers. Brianna Miller added 11.
 
Behind a barrage of 3-points and a boost from the bench, the Marauders held a 37-32 lead at intermission. Jossart drained three treys in four attempts and scored 11 first-half points in a reserve role. Hearn added seven points off the bench, including knocking down her lone 3-point attempt.
 
In a fast-paced first half, the Marauders went 8-of-16 behind the arc with both Dani Williams and Macy Williams connecting twice from deep.
 
After Dani Williams and Macy Williams each hit treys on the Marauders first two possessions of the game, a five point outburst from Hearn gave the Marauders an early double digit lead at 14-4. CSP fought back to take a brief one-point lead and before knotting the game 27-27 in the second quarter. A Jossart jumper and a layup by Kaylee Hinson pushed UMary back in front for good while two more Jossart treys provided the Marauders a 5-point lead at the half.
 
Dani Williams started the third quarter off with a bang, hitting a trey to give UMary an 8-point lead. The Marauders then turned inside to Bohl, who scored a third of the Marauders points in the second half.
 
Behind the firepower of Schmitt, the Golden Bears battled to within a pair of points at 58-56.
 
The response by the Marauders was immediate as UMary scored on its next four possessions. After a basket by Cassie Askvig and a 3-pointer from Macy Williams, Bohl hit a layup before converting a pair of free throws with 1:00 left in the game for a 67-59 UMary lead.
 
No lead seemed safe with Schmitt on the floor. After the CSP guard hit a layup, she turned a steal by Haydn Becker into a trey and closed the gap to 67-64.
 
Refusing to fold, the Marauders claimed the win at the line, making seven straight free throws in the final 43 seconds with Dani Williams converting four in a row.
 
The Marauders finished the game 10-of-28 behind the arc and shot 40.4 percent overall. UMary finished the game 18-of-23 at the line, including 15-of-17 in the second half.
 
The Golden Bears connected on 44.8 percent of their shots and made 6-of-17 3-point attempts. At the line CSP finished 8-of-11.
 
The Marauders conclude the weekend with a visit from Minnesota State University on Saturday, January 13, at 4 pm in the McDowell Activity Center.
