BILLINGS, MT – University of Mary junior
Caylin Cathey forced Colorado Christian University into a crucial mistake in double overtime and the Marauders took advantage to claim a 1-0 non-conference win. The victory keeps the Marauders undefeated after two games this season.
Entering the 104
th minute of play in a scoreless game to start the 2017 MSU Billings Rimrock Classic, Cathey was taken out by Cougars goalkeeper Ireland VanDyke on a breakaway. VanDyke was issued a yellow card and the Marauders were awarded a penalty kick.
Fresh off scoring the game-winning goal in the Marauders opening day win over Minot State University, Cathey was selected by UMary to take the penalty kick. Unflinchingly, the Billings, MT, native struck the ball into the net for the walk-off win at the 103:41 mark of the game.
It is the second goal of the season – and second game winner – for Cathey, who had two career goals entering the season.
"Today wasn't perfect, but we got the result," said Marauders head coach
Sarah Cook. "We needed a game like that to show to ourselves we can pull out a match in overtime pressure. I am very proud of all they overcame in the match. It was nice to get a shutout, too, with tremendous work out of our back line, defensive midfielders and Hannah in goal.
"We had great grit out of the attacking players too, especially to keep grinding in the heat and overtime to get the result. Lastly, a big thanks to our bench. Neutral site games are tough and they were there to support the team and provide energy when we needed it the most."
A defensive battle, neither team had a shot on goal until the final three minutes of the opening half. The Northern Sun Goalkeeper of the Week,
Hannah Smith was forced to make her first save off a header from a corner kick in the closing seconds of the half.
In the 62
nd minute, Smith was caught out of position on a Cougars corner kick but the Marauders defenders made a team save on a shot by Renee De La Torre.
Pressing hard to win in regulation, Colorado Christian was called offsides four times in the final ten minutes before firing a shot high in the 90
th minute.
Smith made the only save necessary in the first overtime to set up more heroics by Cathey in the second.
Smith finished with three saves. VanDyke and Ashleigh Maguire combined for six for the Cougars.
UMary held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks while CCU was whistled for 13 fouls to five for the Marauders. The Cougars were also called offsides 11 times to two for the Marauders.
UMary (2-0) next faces Black Hills State University on Sunday, Sept. 10, in a non-conference neutral site game at the Rimrock Classic.
