BILLINGS, MT – A dominant all-around effort carried the University of Mary women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Black Hills State University on the last day of the Rimrock Classic hosted by MSU Billings. UMary has now won its first three games of the season for the first time since it started competing in NCAA Division II in 2006.
The Marauders claimed the Rimrock Classic title by finishing 2-0 at the event, including a 1-0 win over Colorado Christian.
UMary held massive statistical edges in the game, holding advantages in shots (28-2), shots on frame (12-1) and corner kicks (13-0). The wide margins allowed the Marauders to substitute freely as 22 players competed for UMary on a hot afternoon in Billings, MT.
"It's difficult to play two matches on a very warm weekend," said Marauders head coach
Sarah Cook. "Our team showed versatility and resilience in both games and that's what you like to see going into conference play. Winning the Rimrock Classic was a great step for our team! I am excited and proud of what this group is doing."
The Yellowjackets struck first with an unassisted goal by Katie Nielson in the 25
th minute.
The Marauders quickly retaliated as
Caylin Cathey found the net in the 30
th minute off a feed from
Tiffany Ohlhauser. Cathey has scored goals in all three games for UMary this season, including a pair of two game-winners.
Just before intermission, freshman
Emma Davies tallied for the first time in her collegiate career posting the game-winning goal in the 43
rd minute.
UMary doubled its lead when
Megan Lowery scored her first Marauders goal in the 63
rd minute with
Jade Smith credited with an assist.
Smith led the Marauders offensive onslaught with six shot attempts. Lowery had a team-high three shots on goal.
The Marauders next return to Northern Sun play with games at Augustana and Wayne State on Sept. 16-17.
