SIOUX FALLS, SD – The perfect start to the season ended for the University of Mary women's soccer team in their first conference road game. Riding a three-game win streak, the Marauders were edged 1-0 by Augustana University in UMary's first true road game of the season.
Facing intense early pressure by the Vikings, Marauders goalie
Hannah Smith was forced to make three saves, ward off two corner kicks and face seven shots in the first 12 minutes of play.
The pressure paid off for the Vikings in the 14
th minute when Hannah Kierstead scored off a cross from Mackenzie Main.
The tide began to turn a few minutes later when
Caylin Cathey, who scored goals in each of the Marauders first three games this season, was turned away on a Taylor Machecek save in the 16
th minute. After a couple misses by
Jade Smith and
Emma Davies, Davies rallied and placed a shot on net, only to be denied by Machecek.
UMary had the first scoring chance of the second half but a Davies header veered off target. In the 55
th minute Cathey missed following a corner kick from Smith. The Vikings defense took over for the next 15 minutes before
Hannah Richter's shot attempt went high.
With time closing out, UMary made one more run but Cathey's scoring streak ended when her shot attempt in the final minute was stopped by Macjecek.
Augie (2-1-2 overall, 1-0-1 NSIC) held the edge in shots (22-8), shots on goal (10-3) and corner kicks (13-3) over the Marauders (3-1-0, 1-1-0).
Smith made nine saves for UMary. She and the Marauders defense has yet to allow more than one goal in a game.
Cathey and Davies both had three shots for the Marauders.
UMary concludes its weekend trip at Wayne State College on Sunday, Sept. 17. Game time is 1 pm.
