WAYNE, NE –
Hannah Smith and the University of Mary women's soccer team posted their second shutout of the season in a scoreless draw at Wayne State College. Selected the first Northern Sun Goalkeeper of the Week this season, Smith made four saves in the game as UMary posted another strong defensive performance.
The tie is the first of the season for the Marauders, who are 3-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the NSIC. UMary has yet to allow more than one goal in any game this year, giving up three total in five games.
The Marauders held advantages in shots (17-14), shots on goal (7-4) and corner kicks (5-4) over the Wildcats. Eight different Marauders managed shots, including six players placing their attempts on goal.
After a relatively quiet first half that featured just three shots by each team, the pace increased in the second half as both squads each unleashed eight attempts.
The bulk of the Wildcats efforts came in the final ten minutes of regulation. Wayne State launched seven shots – two that were blocked with one saved by Smith – and generated two corner kicks.
In the first overtime,
Jade Smith looked to end the game early but she missed the net both high and wide.
Facing just one shot in the initial overtime,
Hannah Smith was forced to make a point blank save in the 99
th minute to keep the contest scoreless and force a second extra session.
The Marauders best chance to finish the game came in the 106
th minute but Caitlyn Dooley's header attempt agonizingly hit the post. With less than two minutes left, the Marauders last attempt fell short when
Josefine Dahlberg's header was saved by Rachel Grisham, the seventh and final save recorded by the Wildcats goalkeeper.
UMary returns home to host Bemidji State University at 7 pm on Friday, Sept. 22. The NSIC match will be played at Bismarck's Sanford Athletic Complex, located adjacent to Legacy High School.
