BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary women's soccer team shut down one of the top offensive squads in the Northern Sun through regulation but Bemidji State University managed to find the net in overtime as the Beavers defeated the Marauders 1-0 in Northern Sun play.
The Beavers snapped the scoreless deadlock in the 95
th minute. Allyson Smith took a forward pass from Rachel Norton and broke in alone on Marauders goalkeeper
Hannah Smith.
Hannah Smith came out to challenge the ball but arrived a moment too late as Allyson Smith chipped it over the Marauders keeper's head from about 15 yards out for the freshman's second goal of the season.
Played on a dreary night with 15 mile per hour winds and mist in the air much of the game, the score and scoring attempts didn't reflect the quick tempo at which both teams competed.
The Marauders held the Beavers to six shots, including four on frame, for the game. Both are season-lows for Bemidji State. The previous lows for BSU were 13 shots and six on goal.
UMary took eight shots, including four on net.
Megan Lowery led the Marauders efforts with three shots, all on target.
Smith finished the game with three saves for UMary. Catherine Arneson had four saves for Bemidji State.
UMary slips to 3-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the NSIC. BSU is 6-0 and 4-0.
The Marauders return to action Sept. 24 at the University of Minnesota Crookston.
