Miscues costly to Marauders in draw with Hardrockers

RAPID CITY, SD – Stunned by a goal in the last minute of regulation in a game that was extended due to a 90 minute lightning delay, the University of Mary regrouped in overtime and held on to gain a 1-1 draw at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology despite playing the last few minutes significantly shorthanded.

Holding on to a tenuous one goal lead with time running out, the Marauders were called for a foul inside the penalty box with only 29 seconds remaining in the game. Reserve Justin Berkow was selected to attempt the penalty kick for Mines and converted, forcing overtime.

Neither team could generate much offense in the first extra session as each side fired just a single shot on frame.

The second overtime period proved to be a test of wills for the Marauders. Just 2:26 into the second session, Gabriel Carvalho was issued his second yellow card of the game, sending him to the bench and leaving UMary down a man. Then, only 25 seconds later, Marauders freshman Joel McIlroy was issued consecutive yellow cards and ejected from the game, now leaving UMary down two players for the remainder of the game.

Despite playing shorthanded, the Marauders gave up just one shot on goal in the final 7:09 with junior goalkeeper Ludvig Rhodin making the save.

The Marauders opened the scoring when Carvalho scored off a feed from Jordan Kaubisch in the 63rd minute. The Marauders nearly made the single counter stand up until committing an infraction in the closing minute.

Neither team generated many scoring chances. Rhodin posted three saves in the game as South Dakota Mines attempted 14 total shots. UMary fired off 12 shots but Hardrockers goalkeeper Kyle Daledovich was forced to make four saves.

Mines did hold an 8-4 edge over UMary in corner kick attempts.

The Marauders make their home debut on Sunday, Sept. 10, against Rocky Mountain College. Game time is 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
