Jensen tallies twice in Marauders double overtime loss to #10 Battlin' Bears

BISMARCK, ND – On a blisteringly hot day with both teams playing at full throttle, the University of Mary men's soccer team was edged 3-2 by Rocky Mountain College late in the second overtime. Players on both teams went to the turf for several minutes in exhaustion after Pablo Ferreira scored his third goal of the day for the Battlin' Bears in the 108th minute of the game.

Zack Jensen scored both goals for the Marauders, the first two counters of his career. Ludvig Rhodin made 14 saves – several of the spectacular variety – to keep UMary in the game until the end.

With the temperature reaching the upper 80s and feeling significantly hotter on the new turf at Bismarck's MDU Resources Community Bowl, Jensen opened the scoring in the 13th minute.

Just two minutes after Ferreira clanked a shot for RMC off the crossbar, the Marauders attacked full force downfield. Taking a long thru ball from Andre Asencio, Jensen collected the pass and fired a quick shot into the lower left corner of the goal as the Bears goalkeeper came out to challenge the freshman from Bismarck, ND.

Despite continuous pressure from Rocky Mountain, the Marauders defense and Rhodin held off the Bears until a Marauders miscue in the closing seconds of the opening half. With just 41 seconds remaining in the first half, the Marauders were whistled for a foul in the penalty area. Chosen to take the resulting penalty kick, Ferreira tried to beat Rhodin to the right side but the Marauders junior goalkeeper made the save on the initial shot. Ferreira quickly followed and reached the rebound before the UMary defenders could react and placed the ball into the left of the net to even the score.

Ferreira gave the Bears their first lead of the game in the 62nd minute, scoring his second goal of the game from inside the box into the lower right of the net.

The RMC lead proved shortlived as UMary responded just 85 seconds later. Taking a long forward pass down the left sideline from Michael Hertz, Jensen cut into the left side of the penalty box and fired a narrow-angle shot past the goalkeeper into the lower right corner, knotting the contest 2-2 at 63:00.

The pressure on the Marauders defense intensified in the final 27 minutes of regulation as the Bears fired nine shots and four corner kicks at the UMary goal. The Marauders back line held up, with Rhodin making four saves. The Marauders managed just one shot on frame and one corner kick during the same stretch.

In the first overtime, Rocky Mountain to the lone shot but Rhodin was there for the save.

After placing one of two shots on frame to start the second overtime, it was the Bears third shot attempt that ended the game. Taking a laser cross from the left side by Jonah Gronmayer, Ferreira buried pass into the right side of the net from inside the 6-yard box a107:57.

Ranked 10th nationally in the NAIA, Rocky Mountain held advantages in shots (31-5), shots on frame (17-5) and corner kicks.

The Marauders fall to 1-2-1 on the season. The Battlin' Bears are 4-0.

The Marauders now play their next two games on the University of Mary campus. It is the first time a men's soccer game has been played on campus since the mid 1990s. UMary hosts MSU Billings at 5:15 pm on Thursday, Sept. 14, and Upper Iowa at noon on Monday, Sept. 18.
