Career day by Schnabel not enough for Marauders against Peacocks

BISMARCK, ND – Morgan Schnabel crushed a career-high 16 kills to help the University of Mary push Upper Iowa to four sets in a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-11, 25-21) Marauders home loss to the Peacocks. Upper Iowa, who is getting votes in the national coaches poll, is the third straight Marauders foe who is getting national recognition.
 
Schnabel led all players in kills and hit a stellar .364 for the match. She also tied for the team lead in aces with two.
 
Two other Marauders (5-11 overall / 1-6 NSIC) also cracked double figures in kills. Lauren Randall picked up her ninth double double this season with 13 kills and 12 digs. The senior also tacked on four assists.
 
Anna Nietfeld came off the bench and sparked the Marauders attack with 10 kills. She hit .450, making just a single attack errors in 20 swings.
 
Almeida led UMary with 20 digs. Natalia Cruz added seven kills and 11 digs. Katelyn Olson picked up 48 assists and seven digs. Freddie Campbell also had seven kills.
 
Anna Winter paced the Peacocks (13-3 / 4-3) with 14 kills and Bethany Lovhaug added 11. Three other Upper Iowa players had nine kills.
 
The Peacocks held a .321-.153 edge in hitting percentage. Upper Iowa also dominated at the net with a 17-5 advantage in blocks.
 
The Marauders pushed hard in the opening set in a match that started at 9 am, taking a 21-20 led on a Randall kill and a Peacock attack error. Upper Iowa then ripped off five straight points – the last two on kills by Winter – to claim the set.
 
Schnabel dominated the second set, terminating nine balls on 13 swings without an error. UMary jumped out to a 12-7 lead but soon found themselves tied at 18-18. A kill by Schnabel and consecutive aces by Madison Berghold pushed the Marauders out front 21-18. A kill by Randall closed out the set and the Marauders entered intermission tied 1-1.
 
The Peacocks dominated the third set and eventually led by as many as ten points in the fourth set to claim the win.
 
The Marauders continue their four-game home stand when they host Wayne State College and Augustana on Oct. 6-7.
