CROOKSTON – University of Mary leadoff hitter
Andrew Beyer posted a career-best four-hit game but the Marauders day was dampened by three big innings from the University of Minnesota Crookston. The Golden Eagles swept the Northern Sun doubleheader 6-0 and 10-8 over the visiting Marauders, scoring three runs in each of two innings in the opener and posting a ten-run stanza in game two.
Game one started as a pitching duel between Marauders freshman James Swafford and the Golden Eagles Jacob Butcher. Neither allowed a run through three innings, although UMC left the bases full in the second inning and stranded two runners in the second.
UMC broke through in the fourth. A 2-run home run by Anthony Stewart capped a three-run outburst. The Golden Eagles doubled their advantage to 6-0 with another three runs in the fifth.
Butcher limited the Marauders to three hits and one walk. He struck out five in a seven-inning complete game. Never did Mary have more than one baserunner in any inning.
Three UMC hitters had two hits. Mitchell Bornhauser also scored twice and drove in a run. Zach Frazier drove in two runs and Jeremy Spinner scored one.
The Marauders broke ahead for the first time in the opening inning of game two. Beyer led off with a single, took third on a
Seth Meide single and scored on an attempted double steal with Meide thrown out at second.
Beyer kicked off a two-out rally in the third with a double, increasing the Mary lead to 2-0 after a single by Meide and a UMC error plated the senior from Fargo, ND.
The Golden Eagles ensured a doubleheader sweep in the bottom of the third, scoring ten times. Combining just three hits with four walks, four hit batters and a Marauders error, UMC sent 15 batters to the plate. In an inning where just three of the runs were earned, the big blow was an inside-the-park grand slam for Stewart.
Despite an eight-run deficit, the Marauders continued to attack on offense.
Daulton Sauce doubled and scored on a
Chris Scott single in the fourth.
Lane Huck doubled home two of the Marauders three runs in the fifth. Beyer then tripled home a run in the sixth to pull within 10-7.
The rally attempt suffered a setback in the seventh when Mary left the bases loaded.
In the eighth,
Seth Siverson led off with a single and Beyer followed with a walk. After an error scored Siverson, a double play short-circuited the inning for Mary.
With one more opportunity to pull even,
Drew Feuerbach managed a two-out walk to keep the Marauders hope alive before a fly ball ended Mary's chance to rally.
Mary held a 15-4 edge in hits but UMC was the recipient of eight walks and six hit batters.
Beyer finished 4-for-4 with a double, a triple and a walk. He scored three times and drove in one run. Meide had three hits. Siverson was 2-for-4 with two run scored. Scott also had two hits.
Nicholas Stobbe pitched three scoreless innings of relief for Mary, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out four.
Stewart finished 2-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Frazier also scored twice.
The Marauders return home to host Upper Iowa on April 8-9.
