Marauders falter on final day of 4Him Classic

PHOENIX, AZ – A strong start in his season debut for stalwart University of Mary righthander Jake Johnson wasn't enough to provide the Marauders a win on the final day of the 4Him Classic in Phoenix, AZ. Mary dropped the opener 4-1 to #11 The Master's University and closed with an 8-0 loss to Arizona Christian.

Facing one of the top programs in NAIA baseball, Johnson struck out six hitters in five innings. The junior allowed just four hits, two walks and two runs.

After walking the first hitter of the game, Johnson retired the next five before a 2-out uprising in the second led to a run. Scott Savage doubled to left center and Pearson Good followed with a run-scoring single up the middle for the only run The Master's University starting pitcher Aaron Alexander needed.

Mary threatened in the bottom of the second. Lane Huck singled and Travis Stevens followed with a walk, Alexander registered the next three outs without the Marauders plating a run.

TMU again struck with two outs, this time in the fifth. Johnson fanned the first two batters before walking the third. A triple to center field by Michael Sexton doubled the Mustangs lead to 2-0.

After TMU added a pair of runs in the sixth, Mary broke onto the scoreboard in the seventh. Stevens reached second on a two-out error and scored the Marauders lone run of the day on a single to left center by Seth Meide.

Huck finished the opener 2-for-3, posting half the Mary hits.

Cory Dixon threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and a walk.

Alexander gave up just three hits and one walk in six scoreless innings, striking out seven.

Matched against Arizona Christian in the final game of the 4Him Classic, Mary's offense couldn't pull the Marauders out of an early deficit. The Firestorm scored four times in the second and once more in the third to put the game away.

Scott and Will Pettener posted the lone hits for Mary in the game as the Marauders couldn't dent ACU pitcher Kelvan Pilot. The 6-6 righthander struck out eight Marauders in five innings and allowed just two hits and three walks.

Freshman pitcher James Swafford, making his collegiate debut, allowed one run in his first inning of work before throwing consecutive shutout innings. He was responsible for two of the three ACU runs in the sixth.

The Marauders went 1-3 on their opening weekend of the season and next visit St. Mary's University for a 3-game set on Feb. 25-26.
