BISMARCK, ND –
Gabbie Bohl and
Dani Williams combined for 46 points and
Hannah Larson posted an unconventional double double in a thrilling 82-76 overtime win over visiting Southwest Minnesota State University.
Williams knocked down six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 23 points for the Marauders. The junior from Gillette, WY, hit a trey for Mary's first lead in overtime before making another triple with under a minute remaining in the extra session to push the game out of reach.
Bohl also posted 23 points, making 10-of-15 field goal attempts. The redshirt freshman scored 11 of the Marauders 14 points in the fourth quarter and added three in overtime. She also had eight rebounds.
Larson, Mary's leading scorer for the season, was limited to just six points in the game, but four came in a crucial stretch in overtime. She had 12 rebounds, dished 10 assists and blocked six shots.
Trying to protect a four-point lead with under four minutes remaining, Mary (12-14 overall, 7-11 NSIC) struggled to put away an SMSU (3-19, 3-15) team with three wins this season. The Marauders hit just one of five free throws in the final two minutes to open the door for the Mustangs, who forced overtime when Taylor Silva hit a layup with two seconds left in the game.
After the Mustangs jumped out to a 4-point lead in the extra stanza, a Bohl layup and a Williams trey gave the Marauders a 75-74 lead. SMSU regained the lead on a Lauren Hedlund layup before Mary took over the rest of the game. Larson immediately responded to the Hedlund hoop with a three-pointer to put the Marauders back in front for good. Following a Bohl rebound, Williams drained a trey for an 81-76 lead with 47 seconds remaining.
SMSU didn't lack for scoring opportunities in the final seconds but missed six 3-point attempts and two free throws as Mary held on for the win.
One night after committing 26 turnovers in a loss to Sioux Falls, Mary committed just nine against SMSU and held a 20-5 advantage in points off turnovers.
Cassie Askvig scored 12 points for Mary, making 6-of-8 shots.
Rachel Weir added nine rebounds, six assists and seven points.
Lauren Rotunda made three steals, had four assists and eight points.
Caleigh Rodning led SMSU with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Jamie Spicer added 12 points.
The win moved Mary into a tie with St. Cloud State for fourth place in the NSIC North Division and the final home playoff slot. The Marauders own the tiebreaker after beating SCSU earlier this season. The next game for the Marauders is against the Huskies at home in the McDowell Activity Center on Friday, Feb. 10.
