BISMARCK, ND – A combined 53 points from
Gabbie Bohl and
Hannah Larson still left the University of Mary short in a battle between two teams fighting for the home court advantage in the Northern Sun tournament. Unable to keep their first half momentum, the Marauders fell 82-74 at home to St. Cloud State University.
The loss drops the Marauders (12-15 overall, 7-12 NSIC) a game back of the Huskies (10-13, 8-11) in the race for the final home playoff slot in the NSIC North. SCSU is now alone in fourth, one game ahead of Mary with just three games remaining.
The defending NSIC North Player of the Week, Bohl broke loose for 28 points and eight rebounds. The redshirt freshman hit all eight free throws, made 10-of-16 shots from the floor and added two blocks.
Larson, playing the last weekend home series of her impressive career, scored 25 points. The senior all-conference forward made all six free throws, hit both trey attempts and made 7-of-11shots from the floor. She also added four rebounds and three blocks.
Cassie Askvig came off the bench to add 11 points, the only other Mary player in double digits.
Dani Williams and
Lauren Rotunda both chipped in seven assists.
Rachel Weir had five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
As a team the Marauders made all 18 free throw attempts and shot 50 percent from the field. The Huskies shot just 43.5 percent for the game but took 19 more field goal attempts than the Marauders, due to a 14-5 edge in offensive rebounds and forcing Mary to commit 18 turnovers to just eight for SCSU. The Huskies held a 21-4 edge in points off turnovers and a 12-2 advantage in 2
nd chance points.
Betsy MacDonald led SCSU with 21 points. Chelsea Nooker added 17.
Mary led 40-29 at the break after hitting 8-of-11 shots. SCSU captured the second half 53-34 after shooting 55 percent after intermission.
The Marauders conclude the weekend against the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, Feb. 11. Game tine for Senior Day is 4 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
