Dominant defensive effort leads Marauders past Bulldogs

BISMARCK, ND – A dominant defensive effort and another impressive all-around performance by University of Mary senior Hannah Larson in possibly her last appearance at the McDowell Activity Center highlighted a Marauders 65-51 win over the University of Minnesota Duluth.

The 51 points allowed was the second-fewest given up by the Marauders this season. Additionally Mary held UMD to a field goal percentage of .297, also the second-best mark this season.

A hardscrabble affair right from the tip off, Mary trailed 17-14 after the first quarter before shutting down UMD in the second. The Bulldogs hit just 1-of-15 field goal attempts and the Marauders outscored the visitors 12-3, leading to a 26-20 halftime advantage for the home squad. Mary used a 7-0 run before half to take the lead with five of the points courtesy Gabbie Bohl.

UMD scored the first five points of the third quarter to pull within one. Cassie Askvig, who scored 11 points off the bench and added six rebounds, provided the response. The freshman forward from Minot, ND, hit a jumper and then a layup on consecutive Marauders possessions before Larson added a layup for a 32-25 lead.

UMD came no closer than three points the rest of the game.

Mary put the game out of reach with an 11-2 run early in the fourth quarter with Larson contributing seven of the points. The Marauders remained ahead by mostly double digits the remained of the game.

Larson finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds. The Bismarck, ND, native also added three assists.

Bohl, the reigning NSIC Player of the Week, added 17 points. Just 1-of-11 from the field, the redshirt freshman was 15-of-18 at the line. She also had eight rebounds. Dani Williams added 10 points.

Sammy Kozlowski led UMD with 19 points.

Mary had a massive 46-25 advantage on the boards. At the free throw line the Marauders were a combined 28-of-35 while the Bulldogs finished 10-of-13.

After splitting the weekend at home, the Marauders are 13-15 overall and 8-12 in the NSIC and sit in fifth place in the North Division standings. Mary is one game back of St. Cloud State for the final home spot in the opening round of the conference tournament with just two games remaining. The Marauders close out the regular season schedule at Minnesota Crookston and Bemidji State on Feb. 17-18.
