Bohl strikes for career-high 30 in Marauders loss to #23 Vikings

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Unstoppable inside, University of Mary center Gabbie Bohl scored a career-high 30 points to keep the visiting Marauders close through three quarters against #23 Augustana. The Vikings ruled the final stanza and claimed a 77-62 win over the Marauders.

Bohl, who scored 18 of her 30 points in the first half, went to the line 17 times and made 14, just one off her career best for makes. The sophomore was 8-of-15 from the floor and added seven rebounds. She had two steals and committed just one turnover in 29 minutes of play. Bohl's previous scoring high was 29 points at Minot State in Nov. 2016.

While eight other Marauders (4-7 overall, 0-5 NSIC) scored, no one else joined Bohl in double figures. Fellow forward Cassie Askvig had nine points, a game-high 11 rebounds and a team-leading four assists. Macy Williams had seven points and three assists.

Turnovers and poor shooting plagued the Marauders against one of the top teams in the Northern Sun. UMary committed 23 turnovers and forced just 13, allowing Augie (9-0, 5-0) to hold a 17-5 advantage in points off turnovers. Eleven of the points off turnovers came in the pivotal fourth quarter.

Up by ten points at the end of the first period and leading 35-34 at intermission, the Marauders trailed 50-47 at the end of the third quarter. Bohl scored half the Marauders 12 points in the period.

Back-to-back turnovers by the Marauders allowed back-to-back baskets by Augie to cap a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter. Dani Williams hit a 3-pointer to stop the run. A pair of Askvig free throws allowed the Marauders to pull within seven at 59-52 but it was as close as UMary would come the rest of the game. Turnovers on consecutive possessions led to four more Augie points and the Vikings went back in front by double digits, ending the Marauders hopes for a comeback.

UMary made just 28 percent of its shots on the night. Outside of Bohl the team was 9-of-45 from the field. Augie connected on 41 percent of its shots and held a 7-3 advantage in made treys.  UMary did have a sizable edge at the line, making 25-of-29 free throws to 14-of-15 for Augie.

The Marauders now return home to start a three-game home stand when Minot State University visits the McDowell Activity Center on December 19 at 5:30 pm.
