BISMARCK, ND – Red-hot
Macy Williams charred the nets on six treys and the University of Mary women's basketball team rolled past instate rival Minot State University 70-45 in Northern Sun action. Besides an efficient offense, the Marauders active defense contested every shot by the Beavers in UMary's final game before Christmas.
Williams, a freshman guard, scored a career-high 20 points. The Sussex, WI, native knocked down 6-of-7 trey attempts and hit seven out of nine shots overall. She also added four rebounds and tied for the team lead in steals with three.
While Williams led the Marauders from the outside,
Gabbie Bohl anchored the interior. The sophomore forward scored 14 points, making 6-of-11 field goals and a pair of free throws. The Minot, ND, native also had two assists and two blocks.
The Marauders shot 49 percent from the floor, including an 11-of-21 effort from behind the arc. The Beavers, meanwhile, connected on just 16-of-51 shots, a percentage of .314. Minot State did have the rebounding advantage 38-29.
UMary grabbed control of the contest in the early stages. Cristal Hearn broke a 9-9 tie with a layup and
Cassie Askvig followed with a three-point play to push the Marauders in front 14-9. Bohl finished a 7-0 run with a layup and the Marauders remained in front the remainder of the game.
A 22-7 run starting midway through the third quarter and into the fourth sealed the game for the Marauders as UMary led 59-37 with eight minutes to play. The margin eventually grew to as many as 26 points.
Askvig added eight points, four rebounds and five assists for the Marauders (5-7 overall, 1-5 NSIC).
Lauren Rotunda had six assists, three steals, five points and five rebounds.
Isabel Schmelzer came off the bench to score seven points and haul down five rebounds.
Dani Williams and
Jordyn Jossart both hit two treys and scored six points each.
Kristal Flowers paced Minot State (4-6, 1-5) with 14 points and seven rebounds. Holly Johnson added 13 points.
The Marauders home stand continues when the University of Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud State University help ring in the New Year at the McDowell Activity Center on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 30-31.
