Askvig scores career-high 25 points in hard-fought loss to Dragons

BISMARCK, ND – On a night dominated by defense, Cassie Askvig scored a career-high 25 points for the University of Mary women's basketball team but the sophomore's efforts couldn't save the Marauders night. Playing their first Northern Sun home game of the season, the Marauders lost a hard-fought contest 64-54 to visiting MSU Moorhead.

Scoring from a variety of spots on the floor, Askvig hit 9-of-15 shots for the Marauders. She made 3-of-4 attempts behind the arc and went 4-for-6 at the free throw line. The sophomore forward also chipped in six rebounds and two assists. Her previous scoring high was 19.

As a team the Marauders shot 36.2, slightly better than the Dragons 36.1 percent. MSUM held a 44-36 edge in rebounds, committed fewer turnovers (17 vs 12) and made 16 free throws to seven for UMary.

Lauren Rotunda posted her third double double of the season for the Marauders, pairing 11 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore also added two steals. The third sophomore in the Marauders starting lineup, Gabbie Bohl, just missed her own double double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Jacky Volkert led MSU with 24 points. Megan Hintz added 12 and Drew Sannes 10.

Leading by as many as six points in the opening half, the Marauders needed an Askvig trey in the closing second of the first half to claim a 26-25 lead at intermission.

As the Marauders (4-4 overall, 0-2 NSIC) offense went cold to start the second half, the Dragons (4-1, 1-0) used a 13-2 run from midway in the third quarter to the top of the fourth to build a 46-34 lead. UMary would cut the deficit to six points with 36 seconds remaining but would run out of time in the Marauders efforts to overtake the Dragons.

The Marauders conclude the weekend with a visit from #16 Northern State University on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 4 pm in the McDowell Activity Center.
