WAYNE, NE – Despite 40 combined points from
Gabbie Bohl and
Lauren Rotunda and a double double by
Cassie Askvig, turnovers proved too costly for the University of Mary women's basketball in a 75-68 loss to Wayne State College.
The Marauders held an edge in shooting percentage (49 percent to 43 percent) and rebounding (38-32) but turned the ball over 21 times to just 10 for the Wildcats. Wayne State parlayed that difference into a 24-11 advantage in points off turnovers.
A battle through three quarters, the two teams traded the lead 11 times and tied the score another 16. Knotted at 53-53 entering the fourth quarter, there would be no more jockeying back and forth with the lead like there was in the first three stanzas. The Wildcats gained the lead on a Paige Ballinger layup to start the fourth quarter and never trailed again, using a 15-1 run to build an insurmountable 14-point lead.
The Marauders did cut the lead to 72-66 on a Rotunda jumper with 90 seconds left but ran out of time to complete their comeback.
Bohl led all players with 21 points. She also added seven rebounds. Rotunda made 7-of-11 shots and scored 19 points. The guard out of Fargo, ND, also added six rebounds and four assists. Askvig had 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots.
Schulte led Wayne State with 19 points and six assists. Brittany Bongartz added 17 points off the bench. The Wildcats held a 32-6 edge in bench points.
The Marauders conclude their southern road trip with a visit to #23 Augustana at 4 pm on Saturday, Dec. 9.
