FAYETTE, IA – Fresh off three straight wins at home, the University of Mary volleyball team saw their season-best win streak end at the hands of 25th ranked Upper Iowa University. The Peacocks sweep the Marauders 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-17) to start UMary's final road trip of the season.
Lauren Randall, who went over 1,300 career kills last weekend, led the Marauders with nine kills. The senior is second in the NSIC in kills/set at 4.50. She just missed a double double with 10 digs
Freshmen
Natalia Cruz and
Morgan Schnabel both chipped in six kills. Senior middle hitter
Freddie Campbell added five kills in just eight attacks and had a solo and an assisted block.
Katelyn Olson distributed 22 assists and had five kills. Freshman setter contributed 13 assists.
Ana Winter led all players with 13 kills. Haley Weepie added 10 kills and nine digs.
Though the Marauders trailed the Peacocks just 40-36 in kills, UMary held a 38-35 advantage in digs. Upper Iowa posted big advantages in hitting percentage (.322 to .198) and blocks (9.0 to 4.0).
The Marauders pushed hard in the opening set. Down 21-15, UMary used a pair of Olson kills and an ace to pull within 23-22. The Peacocks ended the Marauders rally by blocking a Randall attack and finishing the set on a kill by Winter.
UMary jumped out to the lead in the second set and held a 12-11 advantage after a Campbell kill. The Peacocks responded with a 14-6 rally to take a 2-0 set lead at intermission.
Set three started in similar fashion as a Schnabel kill pushed the Marauders in front 10-9. Despite the Peacocks attempts to runaway with the final set, the Marauders kept within three at 18-15. A 6-1 run provided the separation the Peacocks required on their way to the home win.
The Marauders complete their weekend road trip Saturday, Nov. 4, at nationally-ranked Winona State University.
