NCAA Division I Jackrabbits race past Marauders 78-54

BROOKINGS, SD – Taking on their biggest challenge of the season, the University of Mary wrapped up its exhibition schedule at NCAA Division I South Dakota State University a day before the Marauders regular season opener. After UMary took a lead later in the first half, the Jackrabbits turned up the defensive intensity to claim a 78-54 win over the Marauders.

"I'm extremely proud of our energy and defensive effort," said Marauders head coach Joe Kittell. "We hung in there with a great mid major team. Their athleticism and length bothered us on the offensive end. We are excited and ready for our season and home opener tomorrow night."

Down 15-9 in the opening minutes, the Marauders went on a 10-2 run to move in front. Connor Hellebust converted a 4-point play that pulled UMary within a point. Brody Sharkey followed with another 3-pointer to give the Marauders their lone lead at 19-17 at 7:47.

Following a David Jenkins, Jr., trey for SDSU, Trevor Zacher knotted the game at 20-20 with a free throw. The Jackrabbits, coming off two NCAA tournament appearances and the favorite to win the Summit League, went on a 9-0 run and entered intermission leading 39-28.

Matthew Kreklow scored baskets on the Marauders first two possessions of the second half to pull UMary within single digits. Hopes to pull closer were dashed when NBA prospect and 6-9 junior forward Mike Daum scored seven points during an 11-0 run for the Jackrabbits.

Ten Marauders scored in their final preseason tuneup. Brody Sharkey led UMary with nine points. He also had five rebounds and three assists. Hunter and Zacher both had eight and Kreklow six.

A regular season game for SDSU, Daum led the Jackrabbits with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Jenkins added 13 points and Ian Theisen 10.

The Marauders host the University of Jamestown on Monday, November 13, at 7 pm at the McDowell Activity Center to open the regular season.
