Sophomores sensational but overtime unkind in Marauders loss to Ichabods

KANSAS CITY – Overtime proved unkind to the University of Mary women's basketball team in a 78-67 loss to Washburn University to close out the Central Region Challenge.

The Marauders had big performances from all three of their sophomore starters. Gabbie Bohl scored a game-high 22 points and had four rebounds. The day after posting a double double in the season opener, Cassie Askvig paired 19 points and eight rebounds. She also had two assists and two steals. Lauren Rotunda registered her own double double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Reagan Phelan led Washburn with 20 points. Alexis McAfee added 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals.

On fire to start the game, the Marauders led 21-9 after the opening quarter as UMary hit 9-of-14 shots. Askvig led the way with nine points in eight minutes. Eventually the Marauders lead grew to 17 points at 28-11 before entering intermission with a 38-30 advantage.

The Marauders relinquished the lead for the first time late in the game as a McAfee 3-pointer pushed Washburn in front 59-58. After regaining the lead on an Askvig jumper, a Bohl basket and a free throw provided UMary a 63-59 lead with 20 seconds remaining.

Unable to seal the game at the line, a Phelan 3-pointer with 16 seconds closed the gap to 63-62. Rotunda made 1-of-2 free throws to grow the lead back to 64-62 but leaving the door open for Washburn. Phelan took advantage, sending the game to overtime on a layup with five seconds on the clock.

Overtime belonged to Washburn. A Rotunda free throw gave the Marauders the first point of the extra session but Washburn, now with all the momentum from their late-game surge, ran off ten straight points to secure the win.

The Marauders (0-2) next face the College of Saint Mary on Sunday at 2 pm in Omaha, NE, before returning home.
