FAYETTE, IA – A scoreless game through 60 minutes, the scoring floodgates opened in the final third of the University of Mary men's soccer game at Upper Iowa University. The Peacocks outpaced the Marauders down the stretch for a 4-1 UIU win over UMary on a cold, wet and windy day.
With the temperatures at 40 degrees and a wind whipping though at 23 miles per hour, both teams managed to unleash shots early but with limited accuracy. The Marauders held a 7-5 edge in shots in the first half with each team firing the ball on frame once apiece in a scoreless opening session.
Both teams doubled their shot attempts in the second half but neither could score until the 61
st minute.
Upper Iowa drew first blood on a goal by Ruairdh Crawford, his first of two on the day.
UMary pressed hard to find the equalizer, firing off seven shots to one for UIU over the next 18 minutes.
Alberto Asencio blasted three shots on frame and
Gabriel Carvalho one but Peacocks Connor Rortvedt kept each Marauders attempt out of the net to maintain the tenuous Peacocks lead.
The match changed dramatically in the span of two minutes. At 79:18, Aaron Morgan took across from right to left and scored his first goal of the season. Just 1:59 later, Tim Brackett scored his first goal of the season, also on a cross, to push the UIU lead to 3-0.
Taking advantage of miscommunication by the Peacocks defense,
Michael Hertz took a feed from Asencio in the 87
th minute to put the Marauders on the scoreboard. It was the second goal of the season for the UMary sophomore box.
A scant 64 seconds later the Peacocks concluded the day's scoring with Crawford's second counter of the day and seventh of the season.
Asencio led the Marauders attack with seven shots, including three on target.
Pablo Torne and Guilherme Zogbi Da Silva both fired three shots.
Ludvig Rhodin totaled three saves for the Marauders. Rortvedt had six for UIU.
UMary held advantages in shots (21-16) and corner kicks (3-1) while both teams had the same amount of shots on frame with seven apiece.
The Marauders close out the regular season at Fort Hays State University on Nov. 4.
