Joel McIlroy tallied twice and fellow freshman
Gabriel Carvalho scored once to lead the University of Mary to a 3-0 road win over Jamestown University. It was the third win in the last four games for the Marauders.
Less than five minutes after entering the match, Carvalho scored the first goal of the game. With a helper from
Mitch Carter, the native of Niteroi, Brazil, provided the Marauders a 1-0 lead in the 38
th minute of the match. It was his second goal of the season.
Taking advantage of a major Jimmies miscue, McIlroy doubled the Marauders lead when he converted a penalty kick in the 65
th minute.
The UMary freshman from Larne, Northern Ireland, sealed the victory with a goal in the 80
th minute. McIlroy now owns a team-leading five counters in his first season.
Ludvig Rhodin registered his third clean sheet of the season, posting four saves without allowing a goal.
The Marauders held an edge in shots (11-7), shots on frame (6-4) and corner kicks (7-2). UMary also committed more fouls (12-9), though UJ was cited for four of the seven yellow cards awarded.
In the midst of a five-game road trip, the Marauders next visit Brandon University on Saturday, Oct. 7.
