Offensive outburst gets Marauders back in win column with sweep of Beavers

BISMARCK, ND – Behind their best offensive performance of the season, the University of Mary swept past visiting Bemidji State University 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-15). Lauren Randall led the way for the Marauders with 20 kills and Natalia Cruz added 13.

The Marauders hit .328 on the night, a season high. UMary posted 52 kills and just 14 attack errors. While Bemidji State had only 12 hitting errors, the Beavers managed to terminate just 31 balls.

Randall attacked at will on the night. The senior registered just one hitting error and crushed the ball at a season-best clip of .543. The NSIC runner-up in kills/game also had eight digs.

In addition to her 13 kills, Cruz also had eight digs.

Fellow freshman Madeline Burch posted six kills and hit an impressive .750 as she didn't have an attack error on the night in her eight chances. Geovana Almeida led UMary with 12 digs and Jody Heidel had 10.

Down 20-19 in the opening set, the Marauders set the tone for the rest of the night by rolling off six straight points to claim a 1-0 lead. Cruz sandwiched a pair of kills around a BSU attack error. Katlyn Olson and Burch added consecutive kills and another BSU hitting error gave UMary the set. Randall served the last five points for the Marauders.

Set two was nearly as tight before Randall exploded. Knotted at 17-17, the Burnsville, MN, native posted six straight kills. She finished off the Marauders 8-2 run with her 11th kill of the set, leading UMary to a 2-0 lead at intermission.

After UMary jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the third set, BSU closed within 15-11. Behind the serving of Almeida, the Marauders ran off seven straight points, the last on an ace by the junior defensive specialist.

The win improved the Marauders to 6-17 overall and 2-12 in the NSIC and snapped a 10-game losing streak. BSU is 3-20 and 0-14.
