Olson powers Marauders past Golden Eagles to complete weekend sweep

BISMARCK, ND – A big day at the net for Katelyn Olson spearheaded the first University of Mary weekend sweep of the season as the Marauders took down the visiting University of Minnesota Crookston 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18).

Olson was nearly flawless on the attack and a key player in facilitating the Marauders offense. The senior multi-tool player posted 11 kills and hit a scintillating .556, making just one error in 18 attacks. Olson also added nine assists and had one solo and two assisted blocks.

Second in the NSIC in kills, fellow senior Lauren Randall continued to pound her way through the Northern Sun with 12 terminations. She also added ten digs.

Natalia Cruz added seven kills. Geovana Almeida led UMary with 19 digs. Amanda Lopes posted 28 assists and had three kills in five attacks.

Kassie Green led UMC with 10 kills.

The Marauders hit .209 for the match while the Golden Eagles were held to a .062 attack percentage.

UMary led by as many as seven points in the opening set before a late rally by UMC pulled the Golden Eagles within 23-21. The Marauders reclaimed the momentum and used a mistake by the Golden Eagles and a Randall kill to claim the first set.

In a closely-contested second set, UMary was down 21-18 before fighting back. Two straight kills by Olson tied the match at 22-22 before a Randall hitting error pushed UMC up 23-22. The Golden Eagles couldn't take advantage of their opportunity, though, missing a serve and committing an attack error to give the Marauders the lead. With Olson serving, the set closed on a Cruz kill off an assist by Olson to push UMary up 2-0 at intermission.

The Marauders defense took control in the third set as the Golden Eagles hit -.233, making 12 attack errors and posting just five kills. UMary broke up a close contest by claiming 11 of the last 15 points in the match.

UMary continues its home stand on Halloween with a visit from instate rival Minot State University. Game time is 6 pm at the McDowell Activity Center.
