BISMARCK, ND – Hosting one of the top scoring teams in the country, the University of Mary men's soccer team held their own through the first half before Fort Hays State University found the net twice in nine minutes midway through the second for a 2-0 Tigers win. Senior Day and the final home match of the season for the Marauders, the loss snapped UMary's three-game winning streak.
The Marauders defense frustrated the Tigers attack throughout the opening period. Despite Fort Hays State holding an 8-2 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, UMary didn't crack.
Ludvig Rhodin stopped the only shot on frame he faced and the two squads were deadlocked at intermission.
Continuing to pelt the Marauders with corner kicks, the Tigers finally broke onto the scoreboard in the 58
th minute of play when Abdoulaye Cisse one-timed a loose ball into the net from ten yards out for his seventh goal of the season.
The Tigers doubled their lead in the 67
th minute, once again off a loose ball situation. Forced to make a save on a point-blank shot, Rhodin could only deflect the ball and not control it. Caesar Jones found the rebound on the edge of the 6 yard box and drove the ball into the net for a 2-0 FHSU lead.
While the Marauders pushed hard for a goal, there would be more yellow cards issued in the last 23 minutes than shots taken. Both teams were issued four yellow cards apiece during the final quarter of the game while there was a combined four shots. For the game UMary was issued six cautions and FHSU five.
FHSU held the edge in shots (18-5), shots on goal (6-2) and corner kicks (11-4).
UMary is now 6-6-1 overall. FHSU is 8-5-2.
The Marauders have two games remaining, Oct. 30 at Upper Iowa and Nov. 4 at Fort Hays State.
