FAYETTE, IA –
Jade Smith tallied twice and
Hannah Smith backstopped another University of Mary shutout to lead the Marauders back into the win column. After a tough loss on Saturday snapped a 5-game unbeaten streak, the Marauders rebounded for a 2-0 win at Upper Iowa University.
The victory improves the Marauders to 8-3-2 overall and 6-3-2 in the Northern Sun, moving up to sixth in the overall league standings. Upper Iowa is 3-9-1 and 3-7-1.
Both teams generated a significant amount of shots – 22 for UMary and 17 for Upper Iowa – but neither put many on frame. The Marauders managed six shots on goal and the Peacocks had five.
Upper Iowa pressed early but
Hannah Smith and the UMary defense was up for the challenge. The Peacocks launched five shots and a corner kick in the first 12 minutes of play.
Hannah Smith was forced to make three of her five saves during the initial flurry.
UMary took its first shot in the 19
th minute and made it count.
Caylin Cathey crossed the ball from the right side to the left and
Jade Smith took advantage, scoring her fifth goal of the year from seven yards out.
The Marauders owned the last five minutes of the opening half but proved snakebit, launching seven shots without success. Cathey hit both the crossbar and the post during the flurry and UMary entered intermission leading 1-0.
Continuing to buzz the Peacocks net to start the second half,
Jade Smith found the net again 92 seconds into the new period. After Cathey's shot was saved by Peacocks Caila Petrie,
Jade Smith followed up and buried the ball for her second counter of the day, doubling the Marauders lead to 2-0.
The rest of the game belonged to
Hannah Smith and the Marauders defense. UMary defenders blocked five shots and
Hannah Smith had to make just one of her five saves in the final 43 minutes.
Jade Smith tied
Megan Lowery for the team lead in goals with six. With her two assists doubling her season total, Cathey leads UMary with four helpers.
Hannah Smith helped the Marauders record their fifth clean sheet of the season.
The Marauders return home to host Minnesota State on Saturday, Oct. 21 at noon and Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 1 pm.
