BISMARCK, ND –
Caitlin Dooley and
Emma Davies posted goals for the University of Mary but the Marauders couldn't keep up with the scoring pace of 13
th ranked Minnesota State University in a free-wheeling game. The Mavericks outgunned the homestanding Marauders 5-2 to remain undefeated and in first place in the Northern Sun.
UMary slipped one slot in the standings to seventh with 20 points. However, the Marauders host Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday, Oct. 22, one of two teams tied for fifth place with 22 points. A Marauders win over the Golden Bears would push UMary ahead of CSP.
Including Sunday's match, just three games remain in the regular season for the Marauders, who are 8-4-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the Northern Sun. Minnesota State improved to 13-1-1 and 11-0-1.
The Marauders goals were the first conceded by the Mavericks this season in league play as MSU had shut out its first 11 NSIC opponents. Additionally, UMary doubled the number of goals allowed by Minnesota State this season as the Mavericks had only given up goals in one game prior this season.
On a windy and overcast day, the Mavericks opened the scoring in the 15
th minute. Abby Hausken lined up to take a free kick into the wind from 38 yards straight out from the right side of the UMary net. Serving a high ball, Jenny Hoerter broke free from the Marauders defenders and headed the ball into the net.
Just over ten minutes later, the Marauders broke the Mavericks 11-game shutout streak in similar fashion to the MSU goal.
Tiffany Ohlhauser launched a free kick inside the Mavericks 6 yard box where
Caitlin Dooley positioned herself perfectly, heading into the net for her second counter of the season, knotting the game 1-1 at 24:52.
The Marauders celebration proved short-lived as Hoerter scored her second goal of the game, this time with her feet from in front of the net, just 17 seconds after Dooley's goal to give Minnesota State a 2-1 lead.
With under three minutes left before intermission, the Marauders missed a golden opportunity to pull even. Behind the defenders after a scrum in the box,
Emma Davies slid a rolling shot off the right post.
The Mavericks tacked on goals in the 58
th and 86
th minute before Davies pulled the Marauders within 4-2 at 85:28. The freshman scored her second goal of the season after picking up a bouncing ball and finding the net. MSU closed the flurry of late goals at 86:41, the third combined goal for both teams in just 95 seconds.
UMary held a 6-2 edge in corner kicks but MSU held the advantage in Shots (17-13) and shots on frame (10-6).
