Marauders win third straight on McIlroy walk-off penalty kick

BOLIVAR, MO – Taking advantage of a major mistake by the home team, freshman Joel McIlroy converted a penalty kick with 43 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the University of Mary men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Southwest Baptist University. It is the third straight win for the Marauders and the fifth in their last six games.

The Marauders opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Stanley Joseph headed home a pass from Andre Almquist. It was the first collegiate goal for Joseph.

The Bearcats pulled even before intermission. Following a shot that hit the crossbar from Alec VanWormer, Jose Marrufo found the rebound and scored at 44:31.

UMary came out firing on all cylinders to start the second half. Almquist bounced a shot off the crossbar and the Marauders fired off three corner kicks and three shots – one on frame – in the first 15 minutes.

After neither team scored in the second half, the Marauders controlled the first overtime. UMary took the only three corner kicks and all three shots – one on frame – of the first extra session.

Both Marauders goalkeeper Ludvig Rhodin and SBU goalkeeper Matt Garza made saves within a minute of each other in the second extra session.

With time running out and a draw seeming to be the eventual outcome, the Bearcats committed a foul in the penalty box 109:43 deep into the match. Awarded a penalty kick, McIlroy drilled home the walk-off winner. It was his sixth goal of the season, his third penalty kick and third game-winning goal.

The Marauders held advantages in shots (16-9), shots on frame (6-5) and corner kicks (11-2).

Rhodin and Garza both finished with four saves.

The Marauders next return home to host Fort Hays State on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 3:30 pm.
