WINONA, MN – Stunned by a goal in the closing moments, the University of Mary women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss at Winona State University. The Warriors scored with 20 seconds left in regulation to end the Marauders five-game unbeaten streak. It also allowed Winona State to move ahead of UMary in the conference standings.
With both teams facing overtime, the home team was awarded a free kick 30 yards from the UMary net after a foul by the Marauders. Winona State's Justice Menge played the ball to Abby Bohanski and the Warriors junior chipped the ball over the shoulder of Marauders goalkeeper
Hannah Smith for her sixth goal of the season at 89:40.
It was the first time this season the Marauders had allowed more than one goal in a game.
A quiet first half, the Warriors just missed scoring when Dariam Molter hit the crossbar in the 39
th minute of play.
Caitlin Dooley had a shot on frame just before intermission and UMary attempted a corner kick but the Marauders couldn't find the net.
With rain falling to start the second half, the Warriors pressed hard for an early goal, taking two shots and triggering three corner kicks in the first eight minutes. Taylor Johnson broke the deadlock at 53:42 when she scored off a helper by Bohanski.
It only took the Marauders 65 seconds to counter. Tripped inside the penalty box by MacKenzie Challoner,
Jade Smith knotted the game 1-1 on a penalty kick. It was Smith's fourth goal of the season.
Both teams had six shots on frame. The Warriors held a 14-8 edge in shots attempted and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Hannah Smith had four saves for UMary.
Jade Smith took three shots with two on frame, both team highs.
The Marauders are 7-3-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the NSIC for 17 points. The Warriors are 7-5-1 and 6-3-1 for 19 points. WSU is tied for 5
th in the NSIC and UMary is 7
th.
UMary completes its road trip at Upper Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 1 pm.
