Lowery strikes late as Marauders rally for draw with Cougars

BISMARCK, ND – The surprise really wasn't that the University of Mary and visiting University of Sioux Falls match went to overtime, but how it got there. Dominant most of the game on both ends of the field, the Marauders needed a goal late in regulation from Megan Lowery to earn a 1-1 draw with the Cougars. It was the third straight meeting between the two Northern Sun foes that has gone into overtime.

The Marauders offense constantly pressured the Cougars net while limiting the Sioux Falls scoring opportunities. UMary held significant advantages in total shots (28-6) and shots on frame (13-5). The Marauders also held a 10-7 edge in corner kicks.

After withstanding an early challenge from the Marauders – including shots by Jade Smith and Caylin Cathey that clanked off the crossbar - the Cougars broke onto the scoreboard first. Lauren LaFavre took a feed across the goal and found the lower right corner of the net in the 38th minute of play, allowing Sioux Falls to enter intermission leading 1-0.

UMary's efforts on the offensive end intensified as the second half continued. The Marauders finally broke through on a set piece with less than three minutes remaining in the game.

Freshman defender Cassidy Pierce served a looping corner kick 10 yards out from the center of the USF goal. A Cougars defender skied high for the ball but just missed heading the ball away. Lowery, however, didn't miss. The junior headed the ball into the right side of the net to even the score 1-1 at 87:13 into the game. It was Lowery's third goal of the weekend and a team-leading fifth of the season.

Pressing for the win in overtime, the Marauders outshot the Cougars 5-1. The Cougars had the last shot, though, and nearly snared the win.

With time running down in the final overtime, LaFavre broke past the Marauders defensive line to come in alone on Marauders goalkeeper Hannah Smith. Smith charged off her line towards the attacker to cut down the angle and made a spectacular sliding open field save to preserve the draw.

The Marauders are 5-2-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the NSIC. USF is 3-5-2 and 2-3-2.

UMary concludes its three-game home stand when St. Cloud State visits on Friday, Oct. 6. Game time is 7 pm at the Sanford Athletic Complex adjacent to Legacy High School.
