BISMARCK, ND –
Jade Smith scored the lone goal of the game to lead the University of Mary to a 1-0 win over St. Cloud State University. The win caps a successful three-game home stand for the Marauders, who won twice and tied the other match while allowing just one goal.
UMary is off to its best start in a decade with a record of 6-2-2 overall and 4-2-2 in the Northern Sun. At the halfway point in league play the Marauders sit fifth in the conference standings. The Huskies slip to 5-6 overall and 3-5 in the NSIC to sit tenth.
"It was exciting to play in the environment we had tonight in front of our fans," said Marauders head coach
Sarah Cook. "Once again, a big "thank you" to all our supporters who made it out to tonight's match.
"It doesn't matter the score line in a match like this. What we needed was a win and our players got the job done. I am proud of our team. But now it is time to prepare for the Bulldogs."
Smith broke the scoreless tie in the 50
th minute of play. The junior attacker drove down the left side and into the box, sending a shot past Huskies goalkeeper Kelsey Christian into the upper right corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
The Marauders nearly doubled their lead in the 85
th minute when
Caylin Cathey drew the defenders to the right side of the goal and slid the ball back to the left side for Smith but Christian slid over to make the save.
Hannah Smith posted her fourth clean sheet of the season for UMary, making six saves in the game. UMary also continued its season-long streak of allowing no more than one goal in a game.
Christian recorded two saves for SCSU.
Smith and Cathey each had five shots in the game. UMary held a 12-10 advantage in shots but SCSU had a 6-3 edge in shots on frame. Both teams had five corner kicks.
The Marauders start a three-game road trip on Sunday, Oct. 8, at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
