Early advantage fades in Marauders 24-13 loss to Vikings

BISMARCK, ND – Sophomores Josh Jensen and Tate Barnhardt once again delivered quickly for the University of Mary wrestling team but the Marauders couldn't hold their early advantage in a 24-13 loss to Augustana. Mary held a six-point lead before the Vikings rallied to win the last four matches.

For the fourth straight match and sixth time in their last seven duals, Jensen and Barnhardt provided Mary wins at both 125 and 133.

Jensen dominated Brandon Carroll, ranked 3rd in the region, earning a 16-4 major decision. Jensen exploded to a 10-2 lead after opening period on three takedowns and a 4-point nearfall. He picked up a fifth takedown in the second period and cruised to the victory. Jensen improves to 11-6 this year.

The opposition didn't get any easier at 133, when Barnhardt faced Bradon Charbonneau, ranked 11th nationally and third in the region. After both grapplers picked up a single point each on escapes, Barnhardt won the match 3-1 on a late takedown of Charbonneau. The win was the 11th straight for Barnhardt, who improved his record to 12-0 in duals and 21-6 overall this season.

After a tough loss at 141, Hunter Eckert put the Marauders back in the win column with a 5-4 win over Colin Ayers at 149. Leading 4-2 before an Ayers takedown in the third tied the match, Eckert pulled off a late escape to push Mary's lead to 10-3.

Augie again fought back with a victory at 157 before Paul Michaelson claimed a narrow 2-1 win over Bruce Lemon at 165. Both picked up points for escapes but Michaelson took the match on riding time.

Leading 13-7 with four matches remaining, the Marauders couldn't hold off the hard-charging Vikings. Augie picked up a major decision at 174 before Aero Amo, ranked 7th in the country at 184, picked up a win by fall at 2:21. Another major decision at 197 clinched the dual win for the Vikings.

Dominic Tudor closed out the day with a tough 4-0 loss to Michael Lowman, 5th regionally at 285. Scoreless entering the third period, Lowman used the only takedown to claim the win.

The Marauders slip to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the Northern Sun. Augie is 9-5 and 3-0.

Mary's 3-match home stand continues when MSU Moorhead visits the McDowell Activity Center on Feb. 5 at 1 pm.
