Early wins by Jensen, Barnhardt not enough for Marauders in road loss to Mavericks

MANKATO, MN – Wins by Josh Jensen and Tate Barnhardt in the first two matches of the night gave University of Mary wrestling team hope as the Marauders battled Minnesota State University in Northern Sun action. The night then took an abrupt turn for Mary as the Mavericks captured the rest of the matchups in a 33-7 Minnesota State win over visiting Mary.

Coming off a strong weekend with three wins in four matches at the Midwest Duals, Jensen continued to display his prowess in the 125 weight class. The sophomore dominated Trevor Schultz in a 13-2 major decision, collecting four takedowns in the win. Jensen led 4-1 after the first period before opening a 9-2 lead after two. Another takedown in the third stanza and a point for riding time gave the Marauders a 4-0 lead.

Barnhardt, undefeated in four matches at the Midwest Duals, rallied from an early deficit for a 5-2 win at 133 over Paul Selman. Trailing 2-0 just eight seconds into the match, Barnhardt used an escape and takedown to grab a 3-2 lead after the opening period. He doubled his lead with an escape in the second and held Selman to the mat in the third to gain a final point in riding time, boosting the Mary lead to 7-0.

Reed Conin nearly made it three straight wins. Cronin tied the 141 match with Louie Sanders at 10-10 on a 2-point takedown early in the third but Sanders escaped to claim an 11-10 victory.

The Mavericks then rolled off seven more wins, including one pin, a technical fall and a major decision.

Dominic Tudor came close to ending the Mavericks run in the final match of the night at 285. The freshman led 1-0 entering the final frame before suffering a 6-2 loss to Chris Zimmer. Needing a takedown in the third period, Tudor instead was taken to the mat with three seconds left for a 5-2 deficit. Zimmer gained a final point for riding time for the final margin.

The Marauders fall to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the NSIC. The Mavericks improve to 6-3 and 3-0.

Mary now returns home for three straight matches, next facing Southwest Minnesota State on Jan. 27 at 7 pm and Augustana on Jan. 28 at 2 pm.
