KEARNEY, NE – On its busiest day of the season, the University of Mary wrestling team split four matches at the Midwest Duals.
Tate Barnhardt captured all four of his matches and
Josh Jensen and
Dane Fischer both had three wins at the event hosted by the University of Nebraska Kearney.
Barnhardt was perfect on the day at 133 pounds, earning all four of his wins by decision. Fisher won his first three outings at 174 – including two by fall – before falling short in his fourth match. Jensen was 3-1 at 125, including a win by forfeit. Jensen's lone loss came against nationally-ranked Ronald Wardleigh of Western State.
The Marauders opened the Midwest Duals with a 30-9 victory over New Mexico Highlands before downing Central Missouri 28-18. That win extended the Marauders win streak to five straight matched.
Mary came up just short its next two matches, dropping a 34-9 decision to Western State Colorado and 24-12 to Colorado School of Mines.
In the opening match of the day, Mary dominated Highlands 30-9 as the Marauders won the first seven matches. Jensen captured a narrow 2-0 decision over Jacob Espana at 125 to kick things off.
Hunter Eckert highlighted the opening run with a pin at 3:31 of the 149-pound match over Orlando Guerra. Jacob Weisbrod went into overtime to win 9-7 at 157.
Fisher ended the Marauders streak against the Cowboys with a 10-8 decision at 165 over Kellen Pelzel for the Bismarck, ND, junior's first win of the day.
The Marauders team win streak continued with 28-18 victory over the Mules of Central Missouri. Down 14-13, Mary took over the dual in back-to-back matches at 174 and 184. Fischer pushed the Marauders in front when he pinned Dylan Lewis late in the first period at 2:33.
Jacob Green claimed a win at 184 over regionally-ranked Allan Person just 2:21 into the match due to an injury forfeit to increase the Mary lead to an insurmountable 25-14 advantage.
In the final two duals, the Marauders faced a pair of teams receiving votes in the national poll conducted by D2wrestle.com. The Marauders claimed just two wins against Western State Colorado in the 34-9 loss. Late in his match, Fischer pinned Brendan Gonzales at 6:47, just 13 seconds before the final buzzer. Barnhardt earned a 6-2 decision.
After Jensen and Barnhardt opened with wins at 125 and 133 against Colorado Mesa, the Orediggers reeled off seven straight wins before forfeiting at 285 in a 24-12 Marauders loss.
Mary (5-4 overall, 1-1 Northern Sun) next visits Minnesota State University on Jan. 20 before beginning a 3-match home stand.
