ST. CLOUD, MN –
Rickey Suggs regained his scoring touch but second half shooting woes by the University of Mary keyed the Marauders 88-73 setback at St, Cloud State University on New Year's Eve.
Held scoreless in the final two games prior to Christmas break, Suggs opened the final weekend of 2016 with ten points at Minnesota Duluth. The senior forward followed up with a team-high 17 points against the Huskies. He hit 7-of-15 shots on the night and added seven rebounds and three assists.
Behind a balanced scoring attack in the first that saw nine different Marauders score points, Mary led by as many as seven in the first half following back-to-back 3-pointers from
Luke Scott and
Erron Collins.
Connecting on 47.5 percent of their shots in the opening stanza, the Marauders held a 41-39 lead at intermission.
After
Damonta Henry knocked down a trey early in the second half to take a 44-41 lead, the Marauders shooting touch evaporated while the home team heated up. A 13-2 run featuring eight points from Mark Hall propelled the Huskies to a lead they would never relinquish.
A
Bryan Jefferson layup with over 13 minutes remaining pulled Mary within 62-59 but it was the last time the Marauders were within a single possession the rest of the night. Mary shot just 30 percent in the second half while SCSU shot nearly 54 percent.
Jefferson posted his second double double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Trevor Zacher added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Gage Davis led SCSU with 21 points. He also had eight rebounds and five assists. Trevon Marshall scored 19 points, Scottie Stone 18 and Mark Hall 13.
After wrapping up a three-game road swing, the Marauders open up the New Year at home against Northern State and MSU Moorhead on Jan. 6-7.
